Sur Ron X (Black Edition) Review

Sur Ron X (Black Edition) Review

Today we’re reviewing the 2024 Sur Ron X, an electric dirt bike with a top speed of 48 mph, an advertised range of 40 miles, full suspension, and 19-inch dirt wheels. Now, we’ll be taking a look at the latest 2024 Sur Ron X Black Edition, to see if this is the best electric dirt bike you can buy.

The Sur Ron can be purchased from Ronhack.com, the official seller for China. We bought our Sur Ron locally, fully assembled. However, if you purchase a brand new one, some assembly will be required.

Sur Ron X Specifications

The Sur Ron X is impressively lightweight at just 100 lbs, producing zero emissions and operating nearly silently. Its power-to-weight ratio is outstanding, making it easy to maneuver and giving you the confidence to tackle features you might not normally feel comfortable riding. The bike stays cool during use, and with its electric motor, there’s virtually no maintenance required.

Another advantage of the Sur Ron X is how easy it is to transport. Thanks to its electric motor, you can lay it flat in a car or truck without worrying about gas or oil spills, making it convenient to load and unload.

Looking at the specs, the Sur Ron X features an exposed aluminum frame without body panels. It stands at a height of 40 inches with a ground clearance of 10.6 inches—ideal for off-road adventures.

The Surron Light Bee X features a powerful 60V 32Ah lithium battery, delivering an impressive peak power of 7,000 watts. The battery, weighing 20 lbs, is securely housed in the center of the bike beneath a locked compartment. For added convenience, it can be quickly swapped, allowing you to get back on the trails without delay.

The Surron Light Bee X is equipped with a direct drive motor, paired with a chain and a large 42-tooth sprocket, generating 18 ft-lbs of torque with a single-speed powertrain. While exact figures for horsepower and torque can vary depending on calculation methods, the bike performs similarly to a 125cc gas-powered dirt bike.

We were impressed by the bike’s acceleration and speed, especially its performance on dirt and sand. Equally impressive is the stopping power provided by its front and rear 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes. The bike also features regenerative braking, which not only slows the bike using the motor but also channels energy back into the battery.

Though the Surron Light Bee X doesn’t come with Bluetooth or an app, it includes a dongle that connects between the bike’s harness and the battery for programming the regen levels. You can easily toggle between three different regen settings using the handlebar switch, or turn it off entirely.

The Surron Light Bee X comes equipped with a Dual LED front headlight, providing a bright and clear view, along with a rear tail light. However, note that the tail light remains constantly illuminated and does not brighten when braking. Additionally, there is no toggle switch for the lights, so they are always on and cannot be turned off.

On the left side of the handlebar, you'll find the digital display, which shows your speed prominently in the center, with a trip odometer in the bottom right corner. You can easily reset the odometer with a small button for tracking your next ride.

The Surron Light Bee X features a toggle switch that allows you to switch between Sport and EP mode. In EP mode, the throttle and top speed are reduced, making it ideal for conserving battery during longer rides.

Suspension and Riding Experience

The bike is equipped with a DMN Volcano dual crown fork at the front and a rear coil offering 8 inches of travel. Both the preload and rebound are adjustable, and the stock suspension performed exceptionally well, handling everything we threw at it. Additionally, since the Sur Ron Light Bee X uses suspension components similar to mountain bikes, upgrading the suspension is easy and offers even more customization for your rides.

Riding the Surron Light Bee X off-road is an absolute blast, especially when compared to the Segway X160 we reviewed in a previous video.

We also rode alongside a CRF 250L — while the Sur Ron was outpaced on the straightaways, it truly shined on the trails with its superior agility. In a drag race, the initial torque from the electric motor is incredibly impressive. Just watch how it gets the jump off the line against both a KLR650 and the Segway X160.

Sur Ron X Range Test

When it comes to range, the Surron Light Bee X is advertised to reach up to 40 miles, though this varies based on factors like riding style, rider weight, and terrain. Unlike gas-powered dirt bikes, which typically measure range in hours, the electric Sur Ron measures it in miles. To put this to the test, we rode on a long dirt path in Sport mode, maintaining speeds between 30–45 mph. We also spent 15 minutes riding in a sand pit to further push its limits.

By the end of our ride, we had covered 23 miles over 2 hours, and the battery was down to 10%, which automatically switched the bike into Eco mode. To achieve the advertised 40-mile range, you would need to ride at a slower pace and less aggressively, especially if you're navigating challenging terrain.
